Desease Information

Infrequent stools, hard stool, and difficulty passing stool are all characteristics of a classic case of constipation. The causes of this condition are numerous and varied. Primary constipation is not related to an underlying medical condition or medication and can persist for long periods of time and is the most common occurrence of constipation. Diet also plays a big role, as diets low in fiber and water intake can promote constipation development. Some medications can cause constipations such as anti-depressants, anti-histamines, diuretics, and opioids. A number of metabolic and endocrine problems can lead to constipation such as cystic fibrosis, celiac disease, diabetes mellitus, and hypercalcemia. Treatment can usually come from laxatives, but physical intervention can become an option in severe cases.
