Colostomy
An opening into the colon from the outside of the body. A colostomy provides a new path for waste material to leave the body after part of the colon has been removed. In some cases of colon cancer a portion of the colon must be removed and in doing so a continually functioning colon replacement must be formed. In cases where the colon has merely been operated on and needs time to rest a temporary stoma can be put in place during a colostomy that can be removed later when colon function has returned to normal.
