Collagenous Colitis
Inflammatory condition of the colon that causes diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, and dehydration. It usually develops during a person’s 50’s and occurs more predominantly in women than men. A colonoscopy usually doesn’t yield enough abnormalities in the mucosa to think collagenous colitis is present, but a biopsy of the affected tissue can give confirmation. Treatment is fairly minimal and includes the intake of bismuth agents like Pepto Bismol and immunosuppresants. Causes of collagenous colitis are sometimes linked to the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
